Computerized Test for Driving License in Vijayawada:

For those vexed with the idea of standing in long queues to get a learners licence report (LLR), there is some good news. Starting from next week, applicants can get their learners licence with just a click of the mouse.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Vijayawada, has decided to switch over to online test of drivers for issuance of "electronic learners licence report" (ELLR) at its office here in Vijayawada. About five new computers are being installed for the purpose. An applicant has to merely visit the office and click the mouse on the correct answers and walk away with the licence.

The computers would be loaded with about 200 questions out of which 20 multiple-choice questions would be posed to the applicants.

" If an applicant answers at least 12 questions correctly, he or she would be issued licence immediately," the Deputy Transport Commissioner, S.A.V. Prasada Rao, told The Hindu on Thursday. Candidates can answer the questions either in English or Telugu.

Mr. Rao said the new system would help save considerable time of applicants and the staff. Besides, it would dispense with the discretion of inspectors in allotment of licence thus avoiding any scope for complaints and corruption, he explained.

Audio test for illiterates:

For the benefit of illiterate applicants, the system had been connected to an audio mode. Such applicants can answer the questions posed through the audio system and would be guided in the process by the staff.

The test would take a maximum of 10 minutes and about 30 applicants could be examined in an hour, he said. On an average, about 50 to 60 people apply for learners licence every day.

Procedure simplified:

Mr. Rao said that it was also decided to install computer facility at the newly laid field testing station at Gannavaram which would be connected to the regional office at MG Road. This would enable the applicants to pay the fee for permanent driving licence at the testing station itself and also obtain the licence at the same place.
